Usain Bolt's Officially a Pro Footballer; Pops a Pair of Goals in Oz

Legend has it that when he was a munchkin, Alexander the Great cried when he realized how much of the world his dad had conquered.

But then dude manned up, went out there, and conquered even more.

So it goes for the greats who yearn to be greater.

Lately, the itch has consumed human missile Usain Bolt.

Somewhere in the midst of his busy sprinting schedule, he noticed that footballers do a lot of running, too. Seven miles a game, according to research, with a few sprints mixed in here and there.

Since he'd retired from his day job and clearly needed something else to do, Bolt found the concept of a second sporting career more and more appealing.

All he needed it seemed, was a club that could use a bitta publicity.

Like the Central Coast Mariners, a first-division outfit in Australia. And why not?

  • Michael Jordan toiled in the lesser leagues when he gave baseball a try;
  • So did Tim Tebow, when he had no choice but to give baseball a try if he wanted to remain a jock.

Bolt earned the start as a center forward in the Mariners' first exhibition game against lower-division Macarthur South West United, and once he got into the swing of things -- as in the 57th minute -- look what he did:

First run. Quick start. No surprise there.

Bolt could be football's next Waco Kid.

Still, it could be a challenge to find another Macarthur South West United when the real season begins.

That means Bolt had best make hay while the pre-season spotlight shines, so he did:

All that's missing was the finish-line tape.

In context, the Mariners posted a spiffy 4-0 pasting on their lesser foes, but that's why they play pre-season games. Kinda like many non-cons in NCAA gridiron football.

What's notable here is Bolt's found twine. His next hurdle, so to speak, is to pop a couple when the bell rings.

Stay tuned.
