Gregg Popovich Calls Angry Timeout after First Wizards Possession

Gregg Popovich isn't the least bit concened with your conventional wisdom.

For example, there's the familiar refrain regarding the use of timeouts in professional sports.

Your garden variety NBA coach will typically not use one of those bad boys too soon.

But this is precisely what puts the Pop in Popovich.

The Spurs hooked up recently with the Wizards in Texas, and their guests won the opening tip.

Of course, this is a perfectly normal beginning to an NBA game, but the Wizards quickly converted their first possession into a basket on a groovy pick-&-roll dunk.

The King of Pop then called a timeout.

Coach Pop wasn't pleased with the apparent lack of movement or effort by his Spurs on the quick score, as the broadcast was still flashing a graphic listing the three game officials as that dunk went through.

The noted wine enthusiast isn't going to wait for an official timeout when there's teaching to be done.

Or verbal abuse to share with one of his players, although Danny Green deserved a flogging for that ill-advised decision.

Anyway, there is precedent for the early Pop timeout.

That was just last season against Bron Bron and the Cavs, with a red-faced Pop reacting negatively to that wide open look from the land of plenty.

Shit, he'll even call them in rapid succession for reasons beyond understanding.

Genius is often misunderstood.
