Liverpool Top Tottenham; Still on Max Premiership Points
It sure looks like wundertrainer Jürgen Klopp has resuscitated the mighty Red juggernaut from Merseyside.
True, his crew has swept through the Premiership's first four weekends unblemished.
The hesitance, though, is the caliber of opposition they've been brushing away.
Of the four -- West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove, and Leicester City -- none are in the top half of the table as it now stands. The Foxes are listed highest, in 11th place.
The 'Pool's play, though, has looked exquisite to the point that they'll be dangerous no matter who the opponent.
Dudes got their first chance at verifying that impression at Wembley today ...
Tottenham did.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side sorted them out with a solid performance that produced a 1-2 victory.
It didn't take long to set the tone, either.
In the first minute, Liverpool thought they'd scored through Sadio Mané, but it was waved off for offside by his Brazilian teammate, Roberto Firmino.
Truth in advertising.
Mohamed Salah and Christian Eriksen both threatened soon thereafter. These were part of a 17-shot barrage, with 10 of them on target. Goals were inevitable.
The first happened in the 37th minute. Georginio Wijnaldum struck with a header, after a textbook corner. Michel Vorm palmed it away, but the newly-implemented Goal Decision System -- the Premiership's version of the Virtual Assistant Referee -- made it obvious the Reds had scored:
Their pressure kept on coming.
It bore fruit again in the 54th, when Mané’s low cross hit the post, deflected off on Toby Alderweireld, rolled across the line and ended up with Firmino, who was alone to tap in and double the lead.
Harry Kane has opened the season in mortal form, so Spurs have been desperate to have a teammate pick up the slack.
One showed up on the 93rd, when Erik Lamela succeeded from a narrow-angle:
One sidebar in Spurs' favor is that, throughout the onslaught, their defense may have bent but did not break. For once, anyway, their sieve-like tendencies were kept in check.
Meanwhile, talk about who the 'Pool's beaten lately has taken a much more credible form.
