Chelsea Blank Brighton with No Bus in Sight

It looks like Frank Lampard's getting the hang of this managing thing.

His Blues once again staged a solid display of good, attacking football while posting their 2-0 victory over Brighton.

Willian and Jorginho got the glory as Chelsea stashed another three points for next spring.

Dudes started pressing within two minutes after kickoff, seemingly warming up by hitting a post in the 15th minute before getting down to business.

Sorta like that.

Anyway, with range and distance calibrated, the Blues set upon totally stifling Brighton and continued going forward at will.

They missed two other opportunities in the first half ...

  • through Pedro, who was stopped by a brilliant Mat Ryan save, and
  • through Marcos Alonso, who missed a sitter at the back post with the entire goal at his beck and call.

Looking to add a bitta spark that the Seagull sorely needed, Brighton manager Graham Potter subbed in Gaëtan Bong immediaely after the break. However, those plans were destroyed when, in the 49th minute, Chelsea was awarded a penalty.

Mason Mount had taken possession after a mistake from Adam Webster, who stuck out a leg to bring the midfielder down. Jorginho was tapped to step up and made no mistake:

The Seagulls kept at it and put a scare into the Blues when a close-range header from Dan Burn hit the bar. Seems they could've used the neon sight-in treatment, too.

Didn't happen, and then Willian secured the three points at 76th minute. After receiving a pass from Callum Hudson-Odoi, the Brazilian found enough space to fire on goal. The ball was slightly deflected en route, which wrong-footed Ryan continued into the promised land:

The Blues now have 11 points, currently good enough for sixth place. Brighton, on the other hand, have no victories in their last five matches, bad enough for 16th place with just 6 points.

The Seagulls will thus be left to ponder their plight while Chelsea's next foray will be midweek in France to face Lille in a Champions League match. Odds are they'll need to keep their high-energy ways in tune.
