Pogba, Shaw Lead United to Opening Day Victory
As of now, the greatest football league in the world is on stage again.
The Premiership, far and away, outdraws any other competition, and its opening match at Old Trafford didn't disappoint.
Frankly, it didn't matter who Manchester United was hosting, but for the record, Leicester City showed up to make it a match.
Hometown fans went home happy, too, as the Red Devils racked up a 2-1 result.
Jose Mourinhé's side was lacking a few familiar names, but the dudes available didn't miss a beat.
Literally in the first minute, United drew a penalty after Alexis Sánchez's shot was blocked by Daniel Amartey's outstretched hand. Paul Pogba controlled the rebound and roofed it, giving no chance for Kasper Schmeichel:
The goal energized United, who kept chasing the second against a brave Leicester side that was always dangerous itself.
The Foxes forced David de Gea to confirm his world-class credentials. Even after a poor World Cup, the Spanish international pulled off a couple of great saves, robbing both on James Maddison and Wilfred Ndidi:
Dude definitely saved the Red Devils with those gems.
Both teams were visibly out of form due to what's becoming an annually taxing pre-season in football's chase for even more revenues, so the pace ultimately downshifted.
At least, until the 83rd minute, when doghouse resident Luke Shaw moved inside of the box and beat Schmeichel from a narrow-angle:
Note that it was his first goal ever as a senior player after 134 matches for both Southampton and United.
Leicester's lovely parting gift appeared in the 92nd minute, compliments of Jamie Vardy. A floater meant for him flew long, caroming off the post right to him, and Christmas came early:
Nothing left to say except the Devils showed their depth, which bodes well for the season.
And if the Foxes stay aggressive, they'll be safe next May.
