Don't Give Liverpool the Premiership Crown Just Yet

After all the Covid-19 pandemic has done to create chaos in the globe's sporting scene, wouldn't you just know that a cabal of OGs could give it a run.

That'd be the crowd up in Jolly Ol' that happens to run the most popular football league on the planet.

There's actually an internal debate in process as to whether Liverpool should be awarded the Premiership title if the current season is abandoned.

Consensus this was just Englishmen being English when the topic first cropped up at the end of February, but amazingly, it's still on the front burner.

The 'Pool was having a season for the ages, ready to reclaim past glories by winning their first Premier championship in 30 years. It's a gap that's hard to believe, given their trophy case is bulging with 18 glistening bits of hardware signifying their past dominance in Englands top tier.

Why would they be denied their accomplishment this season? Surely not because a German has led them.

When the campaign was suspended, the Reds were two victories away from clinching top spot:

There are a number of Premiership sides that believe the season should be scrapped because it didn't -- and probably won't -- finish.

It's an English mentality that's seen in cricket, where the first-ever recorded match showed up in a newspaper in 1344, a mere 200 years after the Viking age. In that sport, if a match isn't totally completed, it's considered a draw, no matter what the score.

To be sure, there's nothing in the league's regulations saying what should happen if a season is abandoned. This is of extreme interest to those having existential moments at the bottom of the table, too:

There's a huge financial difference between the Premiership and the next tier down, there are at least three clubs that wouldn't mind a re-start at all.

With all the clubs hemorraging money during the stoppage, sentiment has it that they're gonna find a way to sort out some way to extend the season on the pitch.

Could be.

  • Maybe the sides agree to just play a couple of matches to wrap up the season as soon as the lockdown's lifted, which is the closest to status quo there is.
  • Maybe the lockdown lifts in September; it's possible, so that means the season might go until Christmas and the 2020-2021 campaign takes on a new format so it can conclude by May 2021.
  • Maybe they do call it a season and expand the playoffs for relegation and European slots.

With a 25-point lead over roughly 75% of the season, there's only one thing that could deny Liverpool their title:

The question is, in terms of the football calendar, is Covid-19 the apocalypse?

The 'Pool can only hope that it isn't and rational English minds prevail.
