World Juniors: USA Eliminates Russia in the Quarters
This was the opening bracket match the Russians were trying to avoid.
Had they defeated Sweden by two goals in the Pool B's last game, their opponent woulda been Slovakia.
But they didn't, and that meant they'd have to get past the defending World Juniors champions if their tournament presence was to be extended.
They didn't do that, either.
It was just Russia's luck that they found the USA in championship form. As this was a one-&-done game, the Americans needed to be at that level in this one, too.
The USA's 4-2 victory was clearly frustrating for Russia. That second goal they surrendered to Kailer Yamamoto was egregious.
However, dumb-ass play of the night went to defenseman Vladislav Syomin, a vital piece to Russia's blueline corps. Losing him in the first period clearly hurt their cause.
Just as much as his slash hurt Max Jones.

The Americans couldn't capitalize on the opportunity, but goalie Joseph Woll held steady on the other end until Kiefer Bellows popped his second of the night in what turned out to be the game-winner.
Kinda like father, like son.
Ditto that for Brady Tkachuk, who assisted on Bellows' first goal.
His dad Keith had a Hall of Fame career, and his big brother Matthew is making a name for himself as a rookie in Calgary.
It'll take more than hockey DNA from here on out, though. Next up is undefeated Sweden in the semi-finals, and if the Americans survive that, odds are they'll meet Canada for the gold.
Dudes have some work to do.
