Thank the Sedins for a Record $397,275 50/50 Payout

It still boggles the mind to see a fundraising staple of the youth hockey rinks making rounds in the big time.

But it's a thing everywhere in the NHL, which includes the Vancouver Canucks.

50/50 raffles benefit good causes at all levels, from offsetting tyke-team costs to the pros dedicating their half of the proceeds to charities.

For the lucky winners of those drawings, of course, the charity begins at home.

The Canucks' last home game of their season provided the perfect wave for a 50/50 bonanza:

  • It was Daniel and Henrik Sedin's final game there, having announced their retirement; and
  • Six oblivious fans never claimed their winnings from previous games.

So, despite the Nux completing another sad sack season, this game was a sellout.

First of all, the twins gave their fans one more display of their flair for the dramatic.

Daniel scored a pair of goals -- including the overtime winner to can the Coyotes, 4-3 -- and it was Henrik who got the assists on each of them:

Meanwhile, back at 50/50 headquarters, the winners of this one showed up and for good reason.

The total payout was CAD507,278 -- approximately $397,275 -- with the same amount again being a windfall for the Nux charity for kids.

The dude who collected on behalf of his syndicate had a system, too:

  • He assembled a syndicate that pitched CAD650 -- just over $500 -- into the kitty;
  • He doled out the tickets so everyone knew who had what; and
  • Lo and behold, he and two buds had the winner in their batch.

In terms of dead presidents, they'll each bask in the glow of $169,000.

If they're raking in six figs for attending a hockey game, they do.

Especially when they're in the midst of celebrating their good fortune.

Which will include, no doubt, raising a few of those glasses to the Sedins.
