Predators Win Presidents Trophy, for What That's Worth
Now they can raise a banner in Nashville.
With the Predators' 4-3 victory in Washington last night, they've clinched their first Presidents Trophy.
By all rights, compiling the best record in any sports season is something to celebrate.
However, ask any NHL club -- especially the Capitals -- what that hardware and some pocket dosh will get you.
Still, it's gotta give a team a non-PED warm and fuzzy feeling when it comes against a fellow division winner and perennial Stanley Cup favorite.
In fact, there's a chalk-following possibility that this could be a preview for the Cup, if ever the Caps would suss out the playoffs. This was a post-season caliber game, though:
The Presidents Trophy was first awarded in the 1985-1986 season. Since then, only eight winners have continued to win the Cup.
The last club to do so was Chicago in 2012-2013.
Blackhawks Nation is still savoring that one over quality adult beverages:
With the retirement of Daniel and Henrik Sedin looming, the Preds would be well-served to remember that Vancouver's Presidents Trophy in 2012 signified their high point early into and despite those prolific twins' careers.
It's not fair, but the Prez is a bauble.
The search for true glory begins next week. At least Nashville gets home ice in every series they play.
