Ducks Stage Mighty Comeback, Then Drill Oilers in OT

When the Walt Disney Co decided to cash in and sell their hockey franchise with the goofy name, the new owners decided to make a substantial break from the imagery.

They dropped Mighty from the Anaheim Ducks' name.

The only real bummer is a cool logo got relegated to secondary status in the process ...

... and now they're left with a huge webbed foot masquerading as a D on their jersey.

But make no mistake.

Those dudes are quite mighty these days, and they've been that way for a while.

In fact, the Ducks are damn near a machine right now, which gives added perspective to just far how the young and talented Edmonton Oilers have come this season under Todd McLellan.

They were impressive while closing out the defending Western Conference champion San José Sharks in six:

The Oil didn't stop there, coming out of the gates swiftly in Round 2 to claim a pair of road victories over Anaheim.

Apparently, that just made the Ducks mad. Dudes ventured into Edmonton and returned the favor, setting the stage for what became an instant classic in Game 5:

Check that shot differential. Cam Talbot was huge against an onslaught that finally got results at the end.

That's when Ryan Getzlaf confirmed yet again that he's an outright monster. One of the greatest hype-crimes in sports is that he's rarely mentioned among hockey's biggest stars. Dude's money when the rubber meets the road:

  • Hhis goal started the last-minute scorring barrage, and
  • His pinpoint pass set up Corey Perry for the winner.

That was the first home victory in this series. Now, Edmonton will be forced to match it.

As to the Oil's complaints about Rikard Rakell's tying goal, dude had help getting into blue ice. Move on.

There's more than enough for them to handle in the immediate future.
