Chiefs Trade Adam Smith's Salary to Washington

Back in the day when dinosaurs walked the earth and even the Tyrannosaurus Rex wouldn't cross Vince Lombardi, the Washington Redskins hired one of the era's coaching geniuses, George Allen.

Dude hated rookies. By extension, he had no use for the draft, either.

In fact, if T Rex had longer arms, odds are Allen woulda made it his starting slinger.

As soon as Allen arrived with the Redskins after owner Jack Kent Cooke opened his checkbook, the team became the Over the Hill Gang.

Allen's teams there went 67-30-1 but never got to the Super Bowl.

Could it be that going with the OGs is now part of Washington's DNA?

Alex Smith will be 34 when he takes his next NFL snap.

He'll also be $71million richer, as that's the guaranteed portion of his four-year contract.

By definition, the Redskins are good with that.

Like Allen, the modern-day Washington management is fine with trading draft picks in order to get a seasoned slinger.

Here's their widely acclaimed haul:

  • A coveted bundle of $17million in cap relief;
  • A third-round pick this coming spring; and
  • CB Kendall Fuller.

This was a double stunner for Fuller. First, like most of his teammates, dude was taken aback by Smith being moved. Secondly, he didn't realize that he was the proverbial player to be named later being named now.

As to 29-year-old Kirk Cousins, it was beyond clear two seasons ago that he wasn't a match for the Redskins' way of doing things.

He wasn't enthused about those two one-season franchise tags, so he didn't need to say a word for the football world to know what he's feeling.

No NFL trade can be made prior to Wed 14 Mar, but like other sports, swaps are often agreed in principle prior to the date.

They can be called off for any reason, but this one looks carved in stone.

And somewhere, George Allen is smiling.
