The Sun Devils Are Gonna Play to Win the Game

Wonder what fired Arizona State coach Todd Graham is thinking right now.

Dude was the only casualty when the university let him go.

The rest of his staff stayed on.

Does this mean the entirety of the Sun Devils' 7-5 season was his fault alone?

Was Graham fired for the most universal of basic reasons?

And what coach would entertain coming to Arizona State if the existing staff remained in place?

Sounds like the Sun Devils and Herm Edwards have been a match for a while.

Make that unofficially a match for a while.

The athletic department's waiting for the school's prez to return from a business trip in China. Sounds like everything will go by the numbers when he returns on the weekend.

After that, the Pac-12 will definitely lead college football in heavy, right-on, and solid post-game and Monday press conferences.

Mike Leach will continue to hold down top spot, whether the topic's football or, say, weddings:

Hopefully, Edwards will start with something classic.

Take that, Las Vegas!

And a good portion of any game's viewing audience.

Going all unicorns and rainbows for a moment, consider this:

Don James became the legendary Dawgfather at Washington because he coached the coaches and let them deal with the players. Thus, the CEO approach Edwards envisions has worked before, and with the current staff continuing, the player relationships are already there.

If all Edwards needs to do is inspire and motivate -- dude's made a living off it -- maybe the Sun Devils have a shot at making this work.

Then again, there's a hella lotta detail work to cover for a dude who's never done the college scene.
