Wimbledon Waves: See Ya, Serena

There's only one reigning queen in England tonight.

And she doesn't play tennis.

The women's No 1 is out at Wimbledon. Serena Williams was done in by the rain and, especially, by a French look-alike of Maria Sharapova.

Meet Alizé Cornet. Williams already has. More than once.

Here's Cornet's highlight shot when she bested Serena in Dubai in early June:

Dubai may have all the money, but the All England Tennis Club complex in London's SW25 has all the tradition. This was definitely not lost on Cornet after match point:

At least there weren't any questions about bras or lack thereof.

With Li Na, the women's No 2, being upset in the third round and No 8 Victoria Azarenka falling in the second, it's like the tennis gods are tossing rose petals in Sharapova's path to the finals. If she holds serve against Angelique Kerber of Germany, she'll face the winner of Cornet's match with rising Canadian Eugenie Bouchard.

On the other side of the bracket, American Sloane Stephens is gone, and Venus Williams is looking shaky coming into her tilt with No 6 Petra Kvitová.

Serena, however, has now been bounced out of all three Grand Slam events this season. After her dominant 2013 performance, this wasn't what she was expecting.

Being mentioned in the same breath as Chris Evert and Martina Navritalova will now have to wait until the US Open at summer's end. If then.
