US Open: Federer Falls in the Quarters

Juan Martin del Potro has bubbled under the marquée names in men's tennis throughout his career.

But he makes himself known on a regular basis.

Like in 2009, when the Argentine claimed the US Open trophy by besting none other than Roger Federer.

Not quite déjà vu this year, because the pairing came a couple of rounds prior to the title match. But there was easily enough vu to rekindle the déjà:

For the record, that's 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(8), 6-4.

Some would say they're disappointed yet again that Federer and Nadal would be denied a meeting at the US Open; they would've met in the semi-finals, as the Spaniard disposed of Andrey Rublev, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Others would counter that this is like missing only one Yankees-Red Sox game all season.

Suffice to say tennis fans need to look elsewhere for their thrills here.

They found at least five of them in points worthy of the ticket prices in the del Potro-Federer match:

The other side of the men's bracket is interesting, if nothing else.

That's where 6-8 South African Kevin Anderson took it to 6-6 American Sam Querry -- 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (9-11) 6-3 7-6 (9-7) -- to reach his first Slam semi-final.

He'll face 12-seed Pablo Carreño Busta, who eliminated Argentine Diego Schwartzmann -- 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 -- to give Spain a second entrant in the quest for the title.

As to Federer, this concludes one of his most productive Grand Slam seasons to date.

The Swiss master came into this match 18-0 in Slam games -- he missed the French Open due to injury -- and claimed both the Aussie Open and Wimbledon.

Dude says he'll keep playing through 2019, so he'll have two more shots at seeing Nadal in Flushing Meadows.

For the record, during that time, the Yankees and Red Sox will play 38 games against each other, excluding playoffs.
