Premiership Relegation Battle: Cherries Avoid the Pits

The lower end of England's top-tier table cannot be tighter, and its wins like this that keeps a club safe from the drop:

AFC Bournemouth blanked Swansea City, 2-0, maintaining a perilous edge that keeps them a step closer to safety.

The Cherries may to the Premiership’s new boys, but they're not new to the English football. The club dates back to 1890; they simply haven't had much big-time feats to cheer about on a national level.

But the rest of England loves it there.

Gotta love Bournemouth for, among other things:

  • Its seven miles of pristine beaches are the best in England;
  • It's reputed to be the country's happiest city;
  • The Beatles' second album cover was shot there; and
  • It even got a mention in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

So, if the Cherries stay up, the town will be even happier.

Swans, meanwhile, used to be the fashionable underdog, but they've fallen back on the old ways. It's a bummer for them, really, as this was a game they should've won easily.

An own goal from Swans’ very own Alfie Mawson opened up Bournemouth's account on the day:

Benik Afobe crafted the first goal for Bournemouth and went on all the way to score his second for the game.

So Swansea City still resides among those destined to be doomed and those desperate to escape.
