The USA brought Panama to life when President Teddy Roosevelt wanted to build a canal bridging the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Columbia just wasn't into it, so he orchestrated a coup that resulted in the isthmus of Panama to secede, form its own country, and glady build the canal.
Simply put, dude got stuff done.

Actually, so would Jürgen Klinsmann, who drew the ire of MLS and USA Soccer bigwigs by advocating that young Americans go to Europe for more advanced development.
