Gold Cup: Jamaica Upends Mexico; Meets USA for Title

Only once in the history of this tournament has a team other than the United States or Mexico won a championship.

That'd be Canada, back in 2000.

Now, the nation whose sporting history includes the most famous bobsled team ever to emerge from the tropics has a shot at joining them.

That's because the Reggae Boyz made a lone goal and nimble 'keeping stand up long enough to dethrone the Gold Cup's defending champion, none other than Mexico.

Yes, mon. Yes it is.

The Boyz exacted revenge for their 3-1 loss to El Tri in the 2015 final.

So this victory has brought joyous times to a perennially happy island once again.

The result also brought a closure of sorts to the teams' 0-0 draw in this tourney's pool play.

As much as Team USA followers shook their heads over the Yanks' playing down to the competition in this event, Mexico's legions had to be wondering who passed out the listless pills to their squad.

El Tri dominated large swaths of play, but couldn't finish, even when André Blake wasn't robbing them. Putting it mildly, the Confederations Cup wasn't kind to them,

Their next generation's been showing their skills, but they're still rudderless when the rubber meets the road. The fact that this tourney was to be their coming-of-age on the international scene hasn't exactly translated into dynamic football.

But that's not Jamaica's concern. They're on their way to a title game again.
