Cabbie Takes Chilean Sportswriter for a $900 Ride in Moscow

The Confederations Cup is supposed to be a rehearsal for the host country's World Cup preparations.

Eight teams gather a year in advance to test the facilities and logistics.

Since the 2018 event's in Russia, it seems like the locals are doing their own run-through, too.

Those infamous taxi drivers are doing their part, as evidenced by this comrade and his 13 screens:

Odds are he's monitoring the police.

That's what Chilean football writer Diego Saez probably thinks now.

Dude flew into Moscow from Romania, where La Roja had a friendly. He was probably already disoriented enough from converting pesos to leus, so when a Russian cabbie hit him up for 50,000 rubles -- just under $1000 -- for a one-hour ride from the Domodedovo airport to his hotel, Saez wasn't putting details into perspective very quickly.

However, one doesn't challenge Russian cabbies on their home turf.

At least, not without a will drawn up.

Yes, when those dudes aren't dicking with elections, they have alternatives.

Fortunately, Russian hotels need paying guests.

Notably, that would be clients like Saez who apparently wander around with 50,000 rubles in their wallets.

So when Saez did the only smart thing he'd done to that point and took a photo of the cabbie's license plate, he turned it in to the conceirge, who notified the police, who found the cabbie and forced him to return the cash.

It appears Russian cabbies are well aware of what Russian jails are like.

In fact, after the police intervention, the cabbie in question even offered Saez free rides for the duration of his stay.

Dude refused.

He's catching on.
