Atlético Madrid Get Real; Claim UEFA's Super Cup

Raise a glass to Los Rojiblancos!

Atlético Madrid finished second in last season's La Liga standings ahead of Real Madrid, and dudes just confirmed bragging rights in Spain''s capital city yet again.

Both sides had to go all the way to Tallinn to do it, but after losing two Champions League finals to Real, Atléti finally paid at least one of them back.

After battling to a 2-2 draw in regulation, Diego Simeone's crew popped two more in extra time to earn UEFA's Super Cup, 4-2.

Atlético showed from minute one that this time in a cup final things would be different.

With just 52 seconds on the clock, Diego Costa got the Red-&-Whites on the board with a half-volley from a narrow angle, cashing in after a long ball from Diego Godin:

Damn. There's always one. Must be an East German holdout.

Los Blancos took a while coming to terms with yielding an early goal, but they leveled things up in the 27th minute with Karim Benzema after a great cross from Gareth Bale:

Marco Asensio had the chance to turn things around moments later, but his finish went centimeters wide.

That meant Real's second would have to wait unti the second half, as the result of a penalty, no less.

Juanfran handled Toni Kroos' corner, which put Sergio Ramos at the spot. Dude sent Jan Oblak to the wrong side and the lead was theirs.

That held until Diego Costa struck in the 79th minute.

The Spanish international roofed Atlétco's equalizer after a great play from Angel Correa:

Atlético took over in extra-time.

Thomas Partey managed a clever cross to Saúl Ñíguez, whose superb volley into the right top corner in the 98th minute to make the stadium pulse:

Real had no choice but to start taking chances, which allowed Atlético to pounce again.

Six minutes later, in fact. That's when Koke fired a one-timer into the bottom corner, putting paid to the afternoon:

Simeone soaked it all in from the stands due to a touchline ban incurred in last season's Europa League.

Making the evening sweeter for the victors was the fact this was the first time since 2015 Real conceded four goals in a match.

So, circle Sat 29 Sep on the La Liga calendar. A spicy rivalry just got spicier.
