Stanley Cup: Preds Tune Up Penguins in Game 3
Back in 1969, Broadway Joe Namath introduced a new twist to team sports.
He guaranteed a New York Jets victory in Super Bowl III.
Mark Messier did his bit for guaranteed results in 1994 and then willed the New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup.
In terms of drama, PK Subban's vow after a Game 2 rout in Pittsburgh was nowhere near those. After all, the Nashville Predators were -135 favorites on the Bovada board, so he was just following chalk.
In a game that was much more entertaining than the final score might indicate, the blueliner's words came to pass:
Smashville's pair of goals within 42 seconds definitely brought the din back to their arena.
Still, it may well have been Pekka Rinne's double save on Phil Kessel's rush and Chris Kunitz's rebound that stood as the actual turning point:
Dude might've found his mojo after a pair of shaky starts in this series.
If so, the Pens offense will have some extra work to do.
It was all over but the shouting in the early third period, but that didn't mean there weren't a few moments of note.
Whoever thought we'd see these scenes:
- Swede-on-Swede violence, when Carl Hagelin and Mattias Ekholm mixed it enough to get called for matching minors; the ghost of Harold Ballard must've soiled himself.
- Sidney Crosby and Geno Malkin in the box together with nary a breath mint in sight.
Meanwhile, we're seeing more than our fair share of flying fish in the Music City:
If this keeps up, gotta wonder what happens if the Predators go on to win the Cup.
