Penguins' Cup Defense Off to a Slow Start

It's a long, long way to next spring.

For the Pittsburgh Penguins, that looks like a good thing.

There's no Olympic break this season -- those bastards! -- but the NHL is giving each club a week's break again around midseason, so there will still be a surefit of back-to-backers.

Apparently, the Pens coulda done with the first one happening a tad later.

Frankly, that point was a gift, anyway.

Someone forgot to tell Brayden Schenn the Flyers traded him to the Blues and not the Cardinals.

The next night, the Penguins wandered into Chicago.

Two problems:

Lotta Chelsea Daggers out there.

The New York Islanders were the last team to three-peat, spanning 1980 to 1983. The feat's only been accomplished five times.

Bovada put the odds of Pittsburgh doing it at 9:1.

30 clubs have different ideas, starting with the Blues and Blackhawks making a statement.

But it's a long, long way to spring.
