Tony Dungy: I Wouldn't Have Drafted Michael Sam

Anyone who follows or knows Tony Dungy knows he has very strong religious views.

So, it shouldn't come as a shock that the former NFL coach -- who sports a Super Bowl ring -- said he wouldn't have drafted Michael Sam, who is gay.

"I wouldn't have taken him," Dungy told the Tampa Tribune. "Not because I don't believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn't want to deal with all of it. It's not going to be totally smooth ... things will happen."

What "things" he might be talking about, I don't know. From the looks and sounds of it, Sam's transition into the NFL has been smooth.

I don't take Dungy's comments as anti-gay or a gay slur. I take them as a media circus à la Tim Tebow.

Dungy is basically a quiet man. He's not the type of coach who craves the spotlight and to him, bringing Sam to the team would have created unwanted attention.

The problem with Coach Dungy's comments are his timing. Sam just made a highly emotional speech after accepting the Arthur Ashe award for courage at the Espy's last week.

Dungy's comments could not have been made at a worse time, especially for a coach as smart and compassionate as he is.

This is a man who stood by Michael Vick and help him get back in the league. Surely, if he can stand by a dog killer, he can stand by a gay man.

We will soon find out what Dungy's commets meant, because the stuff -- as they say, sorta -- is about to hit the fan.
