Redskins Try to Rekindle the Magic: Doug Williams Hired to Front Office

Doug Williams, Super Bowl XXII MVP, and Redskin quarterback great, will be joining the 'Skins as a personnel executive.

This will be Williams' second stint as a personnel executive with a former team, having served with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2004 to 2010.

Williams was the first African-American quarterback to both play and win in the Super Bowl. This hire could be key for the perception of current 'Skins quarterback Robert Griffin III. Williams will hit the ground running, working for a new head coach and pointing to the NFL Draft coming up Thursday 8 May. Washington doesn't have a first-round draft pick after trading it away to the St. Louis Rams for RG III, so the task at hand for Williams will be to make the most of the selections the 'Skins have left.

He also didn't waste time wading into the so-called Michael Sam controversy. Williams complimented the Missouri linebacker for his courage in going public.

Given how far Sam's star has fallen among analysts after he made his announcement, the new Redskins executive may have an opportunity to walk the walk and pick him up.
