Michael Sam Gets Own Show on Oprah's Network

The Michael Sam story has taken a new turn.

News reports are that Sam, who was picked in the seventh round by the St Louis Rams, will have his own reality show on Oprah Winfrey's OWN Network.

The deal apparently was made before Sam was picked in the NFL Draft.

This is not good news for those who were upset over Sam kissing his boyfriend after he was drafted.

What? Did people think that Sam was going to be gay and not date men? Seriously?

If you listen to certain segments of the media, you would've thought Sam had killed someone. But obviously, fans have less of a problem with Sam's sexuality than some media members and current NFL players.

But, as usual, Stephen Colbert's satirical response was spot-on:

Next to Johnny Manziel, the top-selling jersey in the country is Michael Sam's. It's refreshing to see that the world is changing, whether some people want it to or not.

And although I don't think it's a good idea for Sam to do a reality show, it's his life and why do we care who he is with?

The only qualm about the reality show is that it may appear as if he's exploiting his lifestyle. If so, he should consider himself lucky. Many NFL obsrvers feel one of the reasons AJ McCarron fell in the draft was due to his planning a reality show with his girlfriend.

And have you noticed? Since then, there hasn't been a word about it, but I digress.

Back to Sam's kiss. Some, including the SEC Network's Paul Finebaum, have said Sam went too far and believes there's an agenda attached to it.

"This has nothing to do with two men," Finebaum said. "If this had been Tom Brady and Gisele, I would have been just as offended. This was just too much."

I'm sure that, to a certain extent, there is some agenda-pushing here, but I hope it's only a sidebar. Otherwise, it would be a shame. What Sam is doing is transforming a nation's perception, which is sorely needed right now.
