Bitter Harvest: Sapp Feuding with Strahan

Is anyone else puzzled by why former NFL players Warren Sapp and Michael Strahan are feuding with each other?

Outside of Peyton Manning and Richard Sherman, the biggest story in the NFL this week has been Sapp and Strahan going at it.

Actually, the beef began with Sapp, who said that Strahan didn't deserve to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.

OK, so maybe 'puzzled' is the wrong word. The better question might be, Why choose now? It's not wise to think you can upstage a bigger event. In fact, it's downright alienating. But Sapp doesn't seem to notice.

"When you stack it up, he only has four straight Pro Bowls and a mythical sack record that y'all still walk around like it's something to be praised," Sapp commented.

"I mean, y'all have got to get off your high horse in New York and speak about the real. And when you really measure him up, he comes up short."

I'll admit when I first heard Strahan was up for the Hall of Fame, I scratched my head, too, mainly because I didn't realize how good of a career this guy really had. Strahan ranks fifth all-time in sacks with 141½, he led the league in sacks in 2001, and he's a Super Bowl champion.

Perhaps the real issue Sapp has with Strahan is that the former New York Giant is more popular. Strahan is on Fox Sports, is a co-hosting a talk show with Kelly Ripa, and is engaged to Eddie Murphy's ex-wife. He's also a likeable guy which can't be said about Sapp, who on the other hand, has been accused of bullying by former teammates, is on the NFL Network -- which is not seen in every American home -- and had to file for bankruptcy.

In short, Sapp sounds bitter. Maybe he envies Strahan's the life, figuring that should have been his.

Boomer Esiason said this about Sapp on his talk show:

I think [Sapp's] an embarrassment. He’s an embarrassment to anybody who’s ever played the game of football, because he feels like he’s on an island somewhere by himself. And his unprovoked attack on Michael Strahan is ridiculous.”

Even Biggie and Tupac had a more legitimate beef than Sapp has against Strahan. Whatever his reasons may be, Sapp isn't doing himself any favors by being a jerk.
