Longhorn Lottery: Now It's Malzahn to Texas?

Forget the Nick Saban going to Texas rumors.

The hottest story making the rounds is Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn heading to the Longhorns.

If you're an Auburn fan, you might want to stop reading right ... about ... now.

Sports Illustrated is reporting that Malzahn may be interested in the Texas job.

Here's what part of the article said:

According to a source, Malzahn has told friends privately that coaching the Longhorns is his dream job. If confronted with the choice between Auburn and Austin, it’s a no-brainer move for Malzahn to bolt. The best job in the Big 12 is a much more stable place than The Plains, as even a play-caller of Malzahn’s acumen isn’t likely to make adjustments to historical trends.

When asked about the rumor, Malzahan -- unlike Saban -- didn't exactly say he wasn't interested.

"I’m tickled to death to be the head coach of the Auburn Tigers,” Malzahn replied. “I’m very blessed to be the head coach of the Auburn Tigers.

“I really appreciate the guys that [sic] gave me this opportunity and believed in me. We are playing for the SEC championship, so it’s been a good year.”

Did  you see a denial anywhere in those sentences?

I'm not saying Gus is going. In fact, in all likelihood, it's just another way to get leverage for his agent, Jimmy Sexton, to swing a sweeter deal. And yes, that's the same Jimmy Sexton who represents Nick Saban.

Auburn is a nice town, but as many have pointed out, it's not Austin. Texas football does have a bigger football tradition than Auburn, and he would be The Man in Texas, as opposed to Alabama, where no matter what he does, he'll probably always be second fiddle.

So here's some advice for Auburn fans: Until Malzahn signs his new contract, don't get comfortable just yet.
