Stanford's Season May Have Ignited at 0:00 vs USC

Those smart kids from down on The Farm ner Palo Alto have put together some great hoops seasons.

2017-2018 didn't look like it'd be one of them.

The Trees Cardinal were absolutely underwhelming in their non-cons, staggering into the Pac-12 season with a 6-8 record that included losses to Eastern Washington and Portland State.

Kind of a buzzkill when a prestigious big brand goes 0-2 against the Big Sky, if you happen to be that prestigious big brand.

Still, as they say, everyone's 0-0 when conference play begins.

And look at Leland's kids now. They're 2-0 and reviving hopes of a March Madness run.

  • First, they ambush UCLA, 107-99 in double overtime, as the Bruins looked like they'd just been introduced to each other, and then
  • Things were looking grim against USC, trailing 76-74, but the Cardinal did have the ball after Jordan McLaughlin snaked through the key to hit the tie-breaker with 1.7 seconds left.

Dude thought he'd won the game for the Trojans, but that's when Deajon Davis stepped up from 50 feet out:

Stanford's nailed a few long-range howitzers in the last second a couple of times in recent years.

Here's their most remembered, the so-called Miracle at Maples:

That instant was also notable for Stanford alum Tiger Woods rushing the court with the student section and being part of the dogpile.

Happier times.

This time, students didn't rush the court.

They're probably still trying to process where this weekend's results came from.
