Angry White Dude: Hal Greer Was the Real Deal

It was announced on Mon 16 Apr that NBA and Philadelphia 76er legend Hal Greer had passed away at the age of 81.

Greer played 15 seasons in the NBA with the Syracuse Nationals and Philadelphia 76ers. He just might be one of the best players that younger dudes and dudettes have never heard of.

Greer's the all-time leading scorer in 76er history. Yep, not Dr J, George McGinnis, Charles Barkley, or Moses Malone, certainly not Alan Iverson

Dude put the ball in the basket more than anyone else in 76er history: 21,586 points!

And that's just for starters.

Did any of you know this? Dont lie now!

He was a 10-time all-star, 7-time second team all-NBA selection, and led his team to an NBA title in 1967.

Here's Greer's classic jumper in a playoff game that year against the Celtics:

He also had an interesting philosophy on free throws:

That's right. Dude took jumpers from the stripe. His were so technically pure, he didn't think it made any sense to try anything else.

Greer was tthe first to have his number retired in Philly, and the first to be honored with a sculpture on the 76ers' Legends Walk at their training complex in 2017.

Let's not forget that he is one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history. That pretty much says it right there, don't you think?

We all seem to get carried away by the athlets of today. Bigger. Stronger. Faster. And, OK, longer shorts.

However, before social media, SportsCenter, and all the other crap that goes into hype overdrive today, there were some great athletes.

Hal Greer was a great basketball player and, more importantly, a great man!

RIP, sir.
